Opera…in a Hangar? Die Entführung aus dem Serail – Salzburg Festspiele 2013

Owned by Dietrich Mateschitz (founder of energy drink company Red Bull) Hangar-7 (in Salzburg, Austria), is a not really a hangar but a multifunctional cultural center hosting a collection of historical airplanes, helicopters and racing cars. Plus restaurant and bar.

Last Monday, August 26th, this unconventional space hosted an even more unconventional performance of Mozart´s opera “The Abduction from the Seraglio” (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, K.384).

Singers wander among the audience, providing a unique, intimate experience.

New Technology Allows Old Piano Recordings Sound like Today´s Best Digital Music Records!

Zenph, a North Carolina-based company, has developed a new technology capable of capturing the sound of old piano recordings in digital  sound, analyzing the recording, and then re-performing, tha is having a real piano play exactly as it was played in the recording – with a very high degree of fidelity.

This has so far allowed to make a digital sound recording of old performers in the mono era such as Glenn Gould, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin and others, liberating music from its medium in a previously unthinkable way!

Their website has an amazing example with a 1921 Rachmaninoff recording.

They were able to create a duet with Rachmaninoff at the piano and Joshua Bell at the violin.
